Oars and Paddles

It improved upon the tiller system by incorporating a rope and pulley system, allowing for more convenient, controlled and accurate steering of the ship. However, the whipstaff was phased out as steering technology advanced, primarily because it required physical strength to operate and was less efficient and practical than the wheel and helm.
